When business feels harder than we want it to, it can be really easy to look outward for the reason.
The market.
Interest rates.
Inventory.
Competition.
Lead generation.
Social media.
Our brokerage.
And yes, all of those things can absolutely impact our businesses.
But sometimes, the biggest thing standing in our way is something much closer to home: ourselves.
I recently had the opportunity to join my friend Karen Cooper, founder of Empowering Women in Real Estate, on Episode 426 of the Empowering Women in Real Estate Podcast for a conversation about a topic I care deeply about:
Are agents accidentally sabotaging their own businesses?
And this conversation was such a good one.
Karen and I talked about the subtle ways we can get in our own way without even realizing it. Comparing ourselves to everyone else. Focusing on what we don’t have. Allowing rejection to knock us off course. Staying incredibly “busy” without actually doing the activities that generate business. And one of the biggest ones I see with agents: getting busy serving clients and suddenly stopping the prospecting, relationship-building and follow-up that created the business in the first place.
That is how the real estate roller coaster begins.
You work hard to create business. You get busy. You stop doing the things that created the business. The closings happen. Then suddenly the pipeline is empty, and you have to start all over again.
One question from our conversation that I hope every agent will stop and think about is:
What can you do today with what you already have?
We are constantly being told we need something new.
A new lead source.
A new CRM.
A new marketing strategy.
A new social platform.
A new system.
But what if the opportunity you’re looking for is already sitting inside your phone, your database, your relationships, your knowledge, your community or the resources you already have access to?
Before looking for the next thing, take inventory of what is already right in front of you.
You may not need to completely reinvent your business.
You may simply need to identify one place where you’re getting in your own way and make a different choice.
