Beyond the Sale: 10 Lessons 10 Years in Real Estate Taught Me

July is a celebratory month for me.

One year ago this month, I published Beyond the Sale: Unlocking Your Full Potential as a New Real Estate Agent. Ten years ago, I took a leap that changed my life.

At 40, I left commercial real estate and entered residential real estate. I had no idea where the journey would lead. I simply knew I was willing to learn, work hard, and say “yes” to a new opportunity.

Now, at 50, I can honestly say I’m not just older, I’m wiser. Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of helping agents build successful businesses, watching careers take off, serving alongside an incredible leadership team, writing a book, speaking across the industry, and building friendships that will last a lifetime.

When I wrote Beyond the Sale, I wasn’t trying to teach agents how to sell more houses. There are already plenty of books that do that. I wanted to help agents become the kind of professionals people trust, respect, and remember.

As I celebrate one year since publishing the book and ten years in residential real estate, I found myself reflecting on the lessons that have shaped not only my career, but also the message behind every page of Beyond the Sale.

Here are the ten lessons I hope every real estate agent carries with them.

1. Growth happens when you choose it.

Growth doesn’t magically happen because you earned your license or joined a brokerage.

It happens when you intentionally seek it. Attend the class. Read the book. Listen to the podcast. Ask the uncomfortable question. Volunteer for the opportunity that scares you.

The agents who grow the fastest aren’t always the smartest. They’re simply the ones who never stop choosing growth.

2. The right people on your team are everything.

Your environment matters more than you think. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, encourage you, hold you accountable, and genuinely want to see you succeed. At the same time, don’t ignore relationships that consistently drain your energy or keep you stuck.

Negativity spreads quickly. Choose your circle wisely. It will shape your career more than almost anything else.

3. You can do anything you set your mind to.

The biggest obstacle most agents face isn’t the market; it’s the story they’re telling themselves.

“I’m too new.” “I’m too old.” “There are too many agents.” “I don’t know enough.”

Stop with the limiting beliefs; they will hold you back faster than lack of experience ever will. Confidence comes after taking action, not before it.

4. Success is built on consistency.

Real estate isn’t won in one great week. It’s built through hundreds of ordinary days.

Making your calls. Following up. Checking in with past clients. Learning something new.

Showing up even when business feels slow. Small actions repeated consistently create extraordinary results.

5. WHO you know matters more than WHAT you know.

Relationships open doors that knowledge alone cannot. Find mentors. Build genuine friendships. Attend industry events. Support other professionals. Be someone people enjoy working with.

The best opportunities in my career came through people, not because I had all the answers.

6. Real connections outlast any transaction.

Clients may forget the details of the contract, but they won’t forget how you made them feel. People want to work with professionals they trust.

Be present. Listen more than you talk. Celebrate their milestones long after closing day. Relationships create referrals, which equals more business and success. Transactions simply create commissions; focus on the connection.

7. Never stop learning.

The market changes. Technology changes. Contracts change. Consumer expectations change.

The moment you think you’ve learned enough is the moment your growth begins to slow. The most successful agents I know are lifelong students.

8. Boundaries protect your energy.

This business can consume every hour of every day if you let it (and it will).

Protect time for your family. Protect your health. Protect your faith. Protect the things that allow you to show up as your best self.

Burnout doesn’t make you successful; it makes you resentful. Balance makes you sustainable, set expectations and boundaries – protect them!

9. Leadership is lifting others.

One of the greatest gifts this career has given me has been the opportunity to help other people succeed.

Whether you’re mentoring a brand-new agent, sharing an idea with a colleague, or simply encouraging someone who’s having a tough week, your impact reaches farther than you realize.

The best leaders don’t create followers. They create more leaders.

10. When you find your purpose, work no longer feels like work.

Purpose changes everything. For me, that purpose became helping others discover their potential.

That’s why I started Rookie RE Agent. It’s why I wrote Beyond the Sale. It’s why I continue to coach, teach, write, and encourage agents every chance I get. Selling homes is important. But helping people build meaningful, lasting careers? That’s what fills my cup.

One Final Thought

As I celebrate one year since publishing Beyond the Sale and ten years in residential real estate, one thing has become incredibly clear: Success isn’t measured only by the number of transactions you close. It’s measured by the lives you impact, the relationships you build, the integrity you protect, and the person you’re becoming along the way.

Whether you’re studying for your license, closing your first transaction, or celebrating your twentieth year in the business, never lose sight of why you started. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep serving. And never stop becoming the kind of professional people trust, respect, and remember.

If even one of these lessons encouraged you today, imagine what a year of intentional growth could do for your career.

That’s exactly why I wrote Beyond the Sale. It’s not a book about selling more homes. It’s a guide to building a career, a reputation, and a life you’re proud of. I’d love for you to read it, and even more than that, I’d love to hear your story. What lesson has had the biggest impact on your real estate journey?

Share it in the comments below, connect with me on social media, or send me a message. One of my favorite parts of this journey has been learning alongside other agents.

Here’s to your next chapter. I truly believe the best is yet to come.
