Run the Business You Want to Build
In Part One, we talked about the mindset shift from real estate agent to business owner.
Now comes the next question:
What does it actually look like to run your real estate business like a CEO?
It means making decisions based on where you want your business to go, not just what feels urgent today. It means looking beyond the next transaction. And it means creating systems that allow your business to grow without constantly running you into the ground.
Make Decisions for the Business You Want Tomorrow
Here’s a question every agent should ask regularly:
Is this helping me build the business I actually want?
Not just today. Not just this closing. Not just this commission check. Long term.
That perspective changes decisions.
Maybe you could save money by skipping a good CRM. But what will poor follow-up cost you over the next five years?
Maybe training feels optional because you’re busy. But what could becoming a stronger negotiator mean for your clients, reputation, and future referrals?
Maybe creating systems feels unnecessary when you only have two clients. But what happens when you suddenly have twelve?
Maybe you can do every administrative task yourself today. But should you still be doing all of them as your production grows?
Thinking like a CEO means preparing for growth before growth forces you to.
Build Systems Before You Need Them
In Beyond the Sale, I talk about creating a strong foundation from the beginning: organizing your database, using a CRM, tracking expenses, creating a business plan, managing your time, and staying engaged with the activities that actually grow your business.
Those aren’t just “new agent tasks.” They’re business systems. And systems matter because eventually your memory, sticky notes, inbox, and sheer determination will no longer be enough.
Start building structure around things like:
- Lead follow-up
- Database management
- Client communication
- Marketing
- Financial tracking
- Transaction processes
- Past-client follow-up
- Weekly planning
You don’t need a huge team or complicated technology. You just need repeatable processes that keep important things from falling through the cracks.
Play the Long Game
Real estate can make short-term thinking incredibly tempting.
You close a house. You get paid. You move on to the next one.
But the strongest businesses aren’t built transaction by transaction. They’re built relationship by relationship.
Then they turn into a client. A client becomes a referral source. A referral source introduces you to another family. That family sends someone else your way.
But that only happens if your relationship extends beyond closing day.
The bigger question isn’t simply: How do I close this deal?
It’s: How do I build a business people trust, remember, and refer for years?
That means staying in touch. Providing value when you aren’t trying to sell something. Checking in. Remembering milestones. Being a resource. Showing up consistently. Doing the right thing when nobody is watching.
That is playing the long game.
Hold a Weekly CEO Meeting
Here’s one simple habit I think every agent should start. I have recently started doing this practice, and it has made an incredible difference in how I think, plan, and execute in my business and life.
Once a week, step out of “agent mode” and hold a CEO meeting with yourself. Grab a journal, give yourself 20 to 30 minutes, and ask the following questions:
What moved my business forward this week?
What tasks wasted my time?
How many meaningful real estate conversations did I have?
Who needs follow-up?
Where did my leads come from?
What marketing generated engagement or conversations?
What do I need to improve?
What am I avoiding?
And finally: What are the three most important things I need to accomplish next week?
This kind of review is simple, but it forces you to work on your business instead of spending every waking hour working in it.
Think Bigger Than the Next Closing
I wrote Beyond the Sale because I have never believed success in real estate should be measured only by transactions.
Yes, you need to generate business. Yes, you need to close homes. Yes, you need to make money. You are running a business, after all.
But the bigger opportunity is creating something sustainable. A reputation. A network. A database. A brand. A system. A career you are proud of. A business that can grow with you instead of constantly exhausting you. That’s the real shift from salesperson to CEO.
Your license may say real estate salesperson. But the way you run your business should say something much bigger.
CEO.
At the end of the day, becoming the CEO of your real estate business isn’t about having a team, a fancy office, or a certain production level. It’s about taking ownership of where you’re going and being intentional about how you get there.
Build the systems now. Protect the relationships. Track what matters. Keep learning. Make decisions with your future business in mind, not just today’s transaction.
The agents who create lasting success are the ones who understand that growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you lead your business with purpose, consistency, and a long-term vision. So don’t just work harder in your business. Step into the role of CEO and start building the business you actually want.
